An office buyer's perspective on recessed lighting private label and track lighting private label decisions—why the MEAN WELL LED driver is the first spec to choose, and what the OEM vs private label question really means.
I’ll get straight to it: if you’re building a track lighting private label program—or a recessed lighting private label lineup—the housing is not the product. The driver is. That’s a strange thing for an office administrator to say, since I’m not an engineer. But I’ve been buying commercial lighting for over five years, and I’ve learned that the quickest way to ruin a lighting project is to leave the driver decision as an afterthought. For me, the default answer is almost always a MEAN WELL LED driver. Not because it’s the only reliable option, but because it makes the rest of the sourcing conversation much simpler.
Let me set the context. I manage purchasing for a regional facilities company—about 60-80 orders a year across eight vendors. Lighting is one of my biggest categories. When I took over in 2020, I thought buying track lighting private label meant picking a fixture from a catalog and putting our name on it. That was my first mistake.
Everything I Thought I Knew About Private Label Lighting
Everything I’d read about private label told me to focus on the housing: material, finish, cutout size, beam angle. Those things matter, sure. But the conventional wisdom misses the part that actually fails. The LED driver is the component that determines flicker, dimming performance, and fixture life. You can have a beautiful recessed downlight with a perfect finish, and if the driver dies in 18 months, you’re ripping open the ceiling. That’s not a theoretical problem for me—it’s a budget problem.
In 2022, I approved a small order of recessed lighting private label can lights for one of our office tenants. The price was great, the sample looked great, and I didn’t dig into the driver spec. I knew I should have asked for the driver brand in writing, but I thought, “What are the odds they’d swap it?” Well, the odds caught up with me. About a year later, we started getting complaints about flicker. The driver inside wasn’t the one we’d discussed. The dimming curve was completely wrong for the occupancy sensors being used. The tenants didn’t blame the factory. They blamed me.
(Should mention: we did get the fixtures replaced, but the labor cost came out of our maintenance budget, not the purchase order. That lesson stuck.)
Why MEAN WELL LED Drivers Are the Starting Point
I don’t want to overstate this. There are other driver brands I’ve used, and some of them are fine. But when I’m evaluating a fixture, the first thing I ask now is: “What driver is in it?” If the answer is MEAN WELL, the rest of the conversation moves faster. Here’s why.
First, the specs are public and consistent. When a factory tells me a fixture uses a MEAN WELL LED driver, I can pull the published datasheet. I can check whether it has the constant current output our LED board needs, whether the dimming type matches the control system we’re specifying, and what the operating temperature range is. That might sound basic, but in this industry, “driver” is often treated like a generic word. It isn’t. There are hundreds of drivers in the market, and most of them are not interchangeable.
Second, the 3-in-1 dimming option is genuinely useful for commercial track lighting. MEAN WELL’s 3-in-1 dimming—0-10V, PWM, and resistor dimming—gives an installer one SKU that can handle multiple control scenarios. That is a huge operational advantage when you’re stocking fixtures for different projects. Instead of guessing which dimmer a client will use, you can stock one fixture and let the electrician select the dimming mode. It saves time, and time is part of the total cost.
Third, and this is harder to quantify, the failure rate has been low in my experience. I’m not going to claim any driver is perfect. I’ve had a DOA unit in a large order, and we’ve had RMA paperwork before. But the failures were handled through a proper distribution channel, and they didn’t disappear after the warranty period. For a commercial buyer, that matters more than the unit price.
Track Lighting OEM vs Private Label: It’s a Risk Decision, Not a Quality Decision
Now let’s talk about the question I get asked more than any other when I tell people I buy lighting: “What’s the difference between OEM and private label?” In the context of track lighting, I think the terms are used interchangeably so often that they’ve lost their meaning. Some suppliers call OEM the catalog design with your logo; others call that private label. The real difference is who owns the spec. In an OEM relationship, you’re usually buying into an existing engineering package. In a private label relationship, the expectation is that you’re directing the product details—finish, packaging, and yes, the driver.
That’s the part I didn’t appreciate until I had to own the results. With a track lighting private label program, you are not just a customer. In the eyes of the end user, you’re the manufacturer. If the housing is good but the driver is wrong, the problem is yours. If the dimmer buzzes, the problem is yours. If the fixture doesn’t last, the problem is yours. That’s why I want the driver spec locked down before any discussion about logos, packaging, or minimums.
A lot of buyers think OEM vs private label is a short-cut decision: OEM for speed, private label for margin. That’s true to some degree. But the more important question is: who is going to be responsible when something fails? If you’re not ready to answer that, you’re not ready for private label, no matter how good the factory’s catalog looks.
But Doesn’t a MEAN WELL Driver Cost More?
Yes. It does. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. A MEAN WELL LED driver is rarely the lowest-cost component on the BOM. But I’ve learned to think about the total cost instead of the unit price.
When I was newer to procurement, I once approved a quote for track lighting that looked almost identical to another supplier’s quote, except it was about $1,300 less on the line item. The specs looked comparable. The savings looked real. What I didn’t catch was the dimming spec. The cheaper fixture didn’t support the low-end dimming range the client needed, so we had to install a different driver in 35 fixtures on-site. The labor alone wiped out half the savings, and the client was annoyed. The “cheaper” option wasn’t cheaper. It was just cheaper at the beginning.
That’s the thing I wish every buyer understood: the price on the purchase order is not the price of the project. The price of the project includes installation time, troubleshooting, tenant complaints, and the occasional emergency trip to the building. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. That’s why I’d rather spend ten minutes explaining the difference between OEM and private label than deal with a mismatched order later.
My Bottom Line
I know there are legitimate reasons to use a different driver. Some projects require a specific form factor, a different control protocol, or a price point that MEAN WELL doesn’t hit. I’m not saying it’s the only answer. But for most commercial recessed and track lighting, starting with a MEAN WELL LED driver and working backward is the most responsible way to build a private label program.
If I could go back to 2020 and give myself one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t fall in love with the fixture. Fall in love with the spec. And the first spec to write is the driver.
